3 Ways to Keep Soft Toys Clean and Safe For Your Baby

Posted on

Babies develop a very strong attachment to their toys. They take them on trips to the mall, and they hold onto the toys while playing on the lawn. This can make the toys to become dirty very quickly. The toys may also pick up germs from all the surfaces where your child places them (such as the staircase and bedroom floor). This article discusses how you can deal with all that dirt and germs.

Use a Steamer

One easy way to keep soft toys clean and sanitised is to use a handheld steamer. The steam will lift the dirt from the material enclosing the stuffing used in the toy. That steam will also kill any microbes that may have been picked up as the child played with the toy. Just remember to clean the toy at an appropriate time (such as while the baby sleeps at night) so that it can completely dry after the steaming session.

Use Baby Powder

Odors will inevitably build up in the soft toy. When that happens, do not discard your baby's favourite toy. Instead, take a plastic bag that can hold the soft toy and place the toy inside that bag. Next, add about a handful of baking powder or baby powder into the plastic bag. Secure the top of the plastic bag and give the bag a vigorous shake. This will make the material of the toy to absorb the powder. Shake it for several minutes, and then let it sit for several hours. This will allow the powder to penetrate the toy and lift any odors in its material. Later, open the bag and dust off the excess powder. You can use a vacuum cleaner or a brush for this purpose. The soft toy will now smell fresh.

Spot Wash Dirty Parts

Your baby may have spilled a drink on the soft toy and you don't think it is necessary to clean the whole toy. Deal with that spill or stain by spot cleaning the toy. For this, you will need a piece of bar soap, a fingernail brush and some water. Dip the brush in clean water, and then rub it against the piece of soap until a lather forms. Use the brush to put this lather on the dirty part of the soft toy. Brush the dirt vigorously prior to using a soft wet cloth to wipe off the soap marks. Let the toy air-dry outdoors.
