How to Keep a Kangaroo Magnet Looking Great!

Posted on

Souvenir magnets are a great way of collecting fond memories of places you have visited. Magnets which are shaped like kangaroos are very popular among tourist who want to remember their trip to Australia. If you have recently purchased a kangaroo magnet, you will no doubt want to keep it in tip-top condition. This article explains some of the steps you can take to care for your fridge magnet.

1. Keep it out of direct sunlight

Sunlight can be extremely powerful. If the painted surface of your magnet is exposed to direct sunlight, it may begin to fade. The ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can cause the colouring in the paint to breakdown and fade away. Many people make the mistake of thinking that because the sun only shines directly onto their magnet for a few minutes every day, it cannot possibly cause any harm. However, the impact of UV light is cumulative, meaning that each subsequent exposure causes slightly more fading and damage. For example, 4 minutes of exposure to sunlight every day is equal to just over a day of direct sunlight every year. By positioning the magnet so it is not exposed to direct sunlight, you can keep the colouring vibrant and bright.

2. Wipe down the surface

When cooking in the kitchen, a large amount of grease and oil particles may enter the atmosphere before being deposited on kitchen surfaces. Some grease and oil may end up coating the surface of your magnet. Not only can grease and oil make your magnet look unattractive, but it can also damage the paint and colouring applied to the surface. You can avoid this issue by periodically wiping down your fridge magnets with a damp cloth to remove any contaminants which have collected on the surface.

3. Protect the magnet

Grease, oil, and moisture may also form in the space between the magnetic surface and the door of the fridge. If this occurs, you may find that the magnetic bond which holds the magnet in place is temporarily compromised. If this occurs, the magnet may become detached from the door and fall to the floor. If the magnet hits the floor with enough force, it could smash or crack. Regularly removing the magnet and wiping it down can help to prevent this issue.
